Writing & publishing a book doesn't have to be complicated.

There are four simple steps:

1. Book Development - Developing your book is about bringing your book to the quality level where it's ready for submission to a publisher. It's worth investing in this process so it's an easy """"yes"""" for the publisher to add you to their list of authors.

2. Strategic Marketing - Understanding your market and how you'll get your book into the hands of readers. The average book only sells 250 copies. Therefore, to get a return on your investment, create a strategic plan to partner with organizations and associations that will promote & distribute your book.

3. Publishing - Choose a publisher that specializes in your genre and one that will support you in marketing efforts. This is key to a successful publishing experience.

4. Promotion - Promote, promote, promote. This means everything from updating your email signature to a planned email to creating strategic alliances and a launch team, as well as an email campaign to your contact list. The possibilities are endless so establish a budget and pursue opportunities that will result in sales.

These four steps often run concurrently and overlap. It's never too soon to think about how you will get your book into the hands of readers!

This comes as a surprise to many and let me explain why this number is a reality.

Over the years, the publishing industry has evolved to include a technologically robust self-pubilshing option that allows anyone to write and publish a book. With self-publishing, there are no quality checks, no one to flag a sub-par cover design, and an author is largely left to learn about an industry that has taken most professionals years of dedication. The kicker to all of this is that when you're focused on self-publishing, your "job" becomes that of publisher. You're not focused on your mission or your expertise. And we all know that if you're heavily focused on one area, other areas don't get the attention they need to develop.

So, self-publishing skews the average number of books sold (in total) for an author to 250. The book becomes the focus, the business takes a backseat and marketing...well, that's a total afterthought.
